Return of the video games

As most of you know I play a lot of video games. Currently I have more in various states of progress than I’ve ever had before. ಠ_ಠ That’s probably terrible. Anyway, out of the games I’ve played currently, these deserved some (non-spoilery) thoughts.

Quantum Conundrum - Actually quite fun, though you can tell it’s short. The gameplay mechanics are similar to portal, in which you solve a puzzle in a room possibly with the use of boxes. You also have a disembodied voice (your uncle) watching your every move and commenting. (I’m sure the creators hate being compared to Portal, but there’s really no getting around it. It plays very similarly.) The dialogue IS hilarious and I like how changing dimensions causes the paintings in the manor to change. The puzzles themselves really aren’t that hard to figure out, but what gets me is the timing that you need to finish them. If you don’t launch this while standing on that and then throwing that at juuuust the right time you will die. XD Many times.

My only beef right now is that the 3rd wing of the manor (the Red Wing) seems to be buggy/extremely draining on your computer’s resources for no apparent reason. I’ve come across a couple of very simple rooms, where you press the button to do something, and the power light will only travel part way up the wire. The only way to make it go has been to disable bloom and motion blur, turn the game into a floating window, and drop the res down to 600x800 at least. Then you can press the button, the thing goes, and you can put all the settings back after you get through that door or whatever. There are far more complicated rooms earlier in the game that have no problem at all, so it’s a little weird and annoying.

Pokemon Conquest - I got this for my birthday, so I’m not that far…I have 5 kingdoms. I really like it but I’m still not quite sure yet how some of the mechanics work. There is a LOT going on. If you haven’t seen it yet, you basically have a team of up to 6 people with 1 pokemon each that you place on a battlefield against your opponent. You take turns moving around the field and attacking. It’s a strategy RPG instead of a straight-up RPG like the normal games are. What I also like is the art, and the fact that your character TALKS. Granted, it’s not a whole lot of lines, but holy crap. The character designs themselves are also enjoyable. It’s just so refreshing to be playing a pokemon game and everyone is wearing feudal Japan-style clothes.
